    In the early 1950`s,

a couple of professional actors who immigrated to Canada from Germany, Austria and Switzerland, joined together to perform  plays in german. Back then, they still played in Community halls, Church basements and Club houses.

In 1958 the Montreal International Theater was founded. The German Theatre group joined them and from now on performed two plays per year.

The home of Montreal International Theater was "La Poudrière" on St-Helen`s Island, originally a Powdertower from the early Canadian History. Later used as a storage shed and finally converted to a small, intimate Theater with seating for 180.
Due to cuts in financial support from the city, province and federal government,"La Poudrière" had to close its doors in 1978. Montreal German Theatre was forced to go independant and look for another venue.

Since 1980, Montreal German Theatre is independant and  plays at the CENTAUR THEATER, located in Old-Montreal. The Centaur has 2 Halls, the bigger one with 440 seats and the smaller one with 220 seats.  Montreal German Theater plays , depending on the Technical reuqirements of the play, on the bigger or smaller stage.

On a couple of occasions, Montreal German Thatre was able to go on tour with their productions and visit Ottawa, Toronto, Kitchener/Waterloo, Winnipeg, Regina, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver.
The mandate of Montreal German Theatre is to produce plays in german and to show plays by Canadian Authors in Premier performance.
The productions and tours of Montreal German Theatre are supported by the Government of Germany, our sponsors, the Montreal German Club, the Montreal Austrian Club and by friends of the Theater.
